Alex Robinson - Managing Director

Baritone Alex is Toi Toi Opera’s chief bean-counter.

Alex is a Director in Tax at Deloitte and a Chartered Accountant from Christchurch, New Zealand. A childhood of singing in choirs left him with the conclusion while studying accounting at the University of Canterbury that he wanted to be the next Michael Bublé, with accounting as a backing act. This led him to singing lessons with Vernon Midgley and the logical next step of joining the chorus for Southern Opera’s productions of Il Trovatore, The Magic Flute, and Aïda. Despite his best efforts to dive into a life on the stage, Alex went on to graduate with Honours (First Class) in Accounting and Information Systems and a University Prize for being the top postgraduate student in the School of Business and Economics.

While studying voice with Ravil Atlas, Alex gained his LTCL (Singing) and won the Shoestring Opera Trophy at the Christchurch Singing Competitions for ‘Most Promising Canterbury Singer Under 30’. He went on to study with Patrick Power, ONZM, in Adelaide before moving back to Christchurch to continue his enthralling career as a tax advisor.

In addition to Southern Opera, Alex has been a regular chorus member in New Zealand Opera’s Christchurch productions, performing in Don Giovanni, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, La Traviata, Trial By Jury, and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Alex was also a founding member of the UC Glee Club, the Christchurch Pops Choir, the Opera Club, and Atlas Voices, along with forming an opera quintet, The Operatives. As a singer with Atlas Voices, Alex has performed as a baritone soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, and also in the role of King Melchior in their 2018 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Alex has made various attempts to marry his financial and artistic background, including a term as Treasurer for UCan Dance, a founding Trustee and Treasurer for the Atlas Voices Trust (a charitable trust formed to support and manage Atlas Voices) including co-producing Amahl, and most recently as a founding Trustee and Master of the Coin for Toi Toi Opera.

Although now over 30, Alex still hopes to convert the ‘promise’ into a performing reality, be it opera, musical theatre, or croon.
