Mark Hodgkinson - Conductor

Mark Hodgkinson is a Christchurch freelance conductor.

Following study towards a performance degree in trumpet at Canterbury University, he travelled to Sweden to learn from Bo Nilsson. On his return to New Zealand, he joined the Auckland Philharmonia and played with them for a period of three years.

Mark received conducting tuition in his teens from Peter Zwartz at the then Christchurch School of Instrumental Music (now CSM), and in Sweden he conducted Limhamns Brass Band. On his return to Auckland, Mark conducted for Perkel Opera and Mercury Opera. He spent three months in 1995 at the Aspen Music Festival and School, studying under Murry Sidlin.

Mark has conducted for Christchurch Operatic, Canterbury Music Theatre, the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the Nelson Symphony Orchestra, NASDA and Canterbury Opera. He was music director of the chamber orchestra Da Capo for ten years and has also conducted the Resonance Ensemble.

Mark currently conducts the New Zealand Doctors’ Orchestra (NZDO), the Canterbury Philharmonia, the Christchurch Artist Doctors’ Orchestra, the CSM Concert Band and the Otago Symphonic Band. At St Andrew’s he was the music director for their 2018 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors.
