Matthew Oswin - Répétiteur
A graduate of the New Zealand School of Music - Te Kōkī, Matt has a background in collaborative piano performance and chamber music. He was a member of the internationally acclaimed New Zealand Secondary Students Choir, and leader of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra.
At the graduation ceremony where he was due to receive his BMus (Hons) degree in Piano Performance and Chamber Music (completed under the expert guidance of renowned New Zealand pianist and teacher Richard Mapp), he was offered a scholarship to complete a Masters degree at Te Kōkī. He accepted the scholarship, and his Masters in Musicology focussed on Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata, including performance-informed aspects of transcriptions.
On completing his thesis, he spent two years in Los Angeles where he taught at a volunteer-run, low-decile after school music programme, before returning to New Zealand to train as a classroom teacher. He is currently teaching Music and Maths at Catholic Cathedral College in Christchurch, and plays the piano for various musical organisations around town.
Since returning to New Zealand in 2015, Matt has been the accompanist for Atlas Voices, and since 2020, a staff répétiteur with Toi Toi Opera. Recent performance highlights include Dark Night of the Soul and Amahl with Atlas Voices, the Mozart Requiem with the CSO Symphonic Chorus, Miss Saigon and an evening of Way Off Broadway with Showbiz Christchurch. He has also dusted off his violin to perform in the orchestra for Toi Toi Opera’s inaugural production in 2021 Suor Angelica & Elegies (of which he was Concertmaster), Atlas Voices’ performances of the Brahms Requiem and Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living, and as a ring-in for several Canterbury Philharmonia concerts. He has also recently renewed his association with the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival, accompanying the Senior Representative Choir.
